Mitchell Moe, MD

Mitchell Moe, MD, has known since the 5th grade that he wanted to become a physician. Growing up in rural Minnesota, he always dreamed of returning to a small town after his medical training to invest in the community, build close relationships with patients, and provide care both inside and outside the clinic. Dr. Moe’s passion for rural medicine was solidified during his time at the University of Minnesota Medical School’s Duluth campus, which focuses on training rural family physicians. Family medicine was a natural choice for him, as he loves the idea of caring for patients across generations—babies, parents, and grandparents—and walking alongside them through life’s stages.

During medical school, Dr. Moe had the opportunity to learn from incredible physicians at Essentia Health in Duluth, MN. In fall 2022, while still in residency, he interviewed at several Essentia sites and immediately felt at home in Ely. A drive around Lake Shagawa with the medical director sealed the deal, reminding him of family vacations in the Northland as a child. Living and practicing near the Boundary Waters feels like a dream come true for him and his spouse, Michael, who share a love for outdoor activities.

In his practice, Dr. Moe focuses on rural health, chronic disease management, obesity medicine, prenatal care, geriatrics, and inpatient medicine. He believes in being an advocate for his patients, helping them navigate the complexities of healthcare. Outside of work, Dr. Moe enjoys hiking, running, reading, exploring Norwegian culture, and spending time with his two Pembroke Welsh Corgis, Gwilym and Wynnifred.
