Daniel Diaz, DO

Daniel Diaz, DO, is a dedicated sports medicine physician at Essentia Health, where he combines his passion for helping patients with his love of an active lifestyle. Originally drawn to Essentia during a medical school rotation in 2013, he was impressed by the close-knit orthopedic team, cutting-edge interventions, and strong community ties. Now, as part of the department, he enjoys working alongside talented and compassionate colleagues, including his father-in-law, Dr. Jay Butcher. Dr. Diaz is also deeply involved in sideline coverage for local universities, high schools, and community sporting events, which he finds especially rewarding. 

Dr. Diaz specializes in diagnostic ultrasound and minimally invasive ultrasound-guided interventions. He has a particular interest in running and climbing medicine, chronic tendinopathy, osteoarthritis, and fracture care. Additionally, as a certified Aviation Medical Examiner, he performs physical exams for pilots. His goal is to help patients of all ages regain mobility and achieve their personal health goals, whether that means returning to competition or simply enjoying daily life with less pain. 

Dr. Diaz and along with his wife, Dr. Sarah Diaz, a colorectal surgeon at Essentia, chose Duluth, MN, for its vibrant community, outdoor opportunities, and proximity to family. They have three active children who share their love of sports and adventure. Outside of work, Dr. Diaz enjoys trail running, mountain biking, climbing, and serving as a Flight Surgeon in the Army National Guard. He is passionate about inspiring his patients to stay active and live life to the fullest.
