AJ (Ashlee) Espensen, MPH, APRN, CNM, is a certified nurse midwife who brings an authentic and inclusive approach to patient care. Joining Essentia Health in October 2025, AJ combines expertise in public health and nursing to support patients through all stages of sexual and reproductive health. She earned her Master of Public Health in maternal and child health from Boston University and her Master of Science in Nursing with a specialization in nurse-midwifery from Yale University.
Before becoming a midwife, AJ worked as a public health practitioner and registered nurse at a rehabilitation center. Her practice emphasizes patient autonomy and collaboration, meeting individuals where they are and fostering trust in their bodies. AJ values physiologic birth and uses a hands-on, responsive approach to help patients make informed decisions during vulnerable moments. She believes this work builds confidence and resilience, extending beyond the birthing room to strengthen personal and community well-being.
AJ is passionate about providing affirming care for LGBTQ+ patients and those with behavioral health challenges. She is also interested in research and policy initiatives that advance equity and address gaps in care.
Outside of her professional life, AJ enjoys spending time with loved ones, cooking, enjoying sunny days, and attending live music events.
