Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center has been recertified as a Level I Adult Trauma Center and a Level II Pediatric Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons. Essentia is the only hospital in northern Minnesota to hold these designations. The recertification of these programs underscores the hospital’s unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional, timely care.
As a Level I Adult Trauma Center, St. Mary’s offers the highest standard of trauma care, providing total care for patients from emergency through rehabilitation. This includes 24/7 availability of trauma surgeons, radiologists and anesthesiologists, as well as access to specialists such as neurosurgeons and trauma fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons. St. Mary’s also engages in trauma-related research and education to improve patient outcomes and community health.
The Level II Pediatric Trauma Center designation signifies that St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital is equipped to handle the unique needs of injured children, with a dedicated pediatric emergency department staffed by pediatric emergency medicine doctors. This ensures that young patients receive specialized, age-appropriate care when they need it most.
"I am extremely proud of the entire trauma team at St. Mary’s Medical Center," said Dr. Mark Scott, a trauma surgeon at Essentia. "Successful recertification as a trauma center is a reflection of our longstanding commitment to being the regional leader in providing comprehensive trauma care, education and research."
St. Mary’s Medical Center is a vital health care resource for rural communities throughout the region. The hospital’s trauma services are designed to provide immediate, comprehensive care, reducing the need for long-distance travel and ensuring timely treatment for patients.
