The years leading up to menopause, known as perimenopause, can feel like a hormonal rollercoaster. During this time, your progesterone and estrogen levels fluctuate, causing unpredictable menstrual cycles and symptoms that can last two to eight years. On average, women experience perimenopause for about four years before entering menopause in their early 50s. You officially enter menopause after 12 consecutive months without a period.
“This hormonal upheaval can also strain your relationships, particularly with your partner,” said Dr. Brianne Brandt-Griffith, an OB/GYN at Essentia Health. “Mood swings, fatigue, and a drop in libido can lead to misunderstandings and frustration. Working through this phase requires effort and understanding from both partners.”
Working Together
To navigate perimenopause successfully, open communication and mutual support are essential. By working together to address challenges and strengthen your connection, you and your partner can move through this transition with greater ease.
Perimenopause can affect your well-being in ways that impact your relationships. Symptoms like irritability, anxiety, and physical discomfort may sometimes lead to tension, particularly with your partner. To make this transition smoother, focus on honest communication, clear articulation of your needs, and strategies to alleviate difficult symptoms.
Communicate Openly
Sharing your feelings with your partner can help them better understand the emotional and physical changes you’re experiencing while also ensuring you don’t feel alone during this time. Explain the root causes of your mood changes, discomfort, or changes in your sex drive, and invite your partner to express their thoughts and concerns as well.
Make time to check in with each other regularly, so you can reinforce trust and closeness. Remind your partner these changes won't last forever and that you can adapt to the changes.
Discuss Your Symptoms
Hormone level fluctuations during perimenopause can cause physical, emotional, and cognitive symptoms, which your partner may not fully understand. Without clear communication, they could mistakenly believe your behavior is directed at them. By educating them about your symptoms, you can ease misunderstandings and help them provide better support.
Tell your partner you may experience any of these perimenopausal symptoms –
- Anxiety
- Body aches and pains
- Depression
- Forgetfulness
- Headaches
- Hot flashes and night sweats
- Low sex drive
- Mood changes and irritability
- Vaginal dryness
Share What You Need
Your needs may change during perimenopause, and it’s important to communicate them openly. Whether you need time alone, extra closeness, or practical help with day-to-day responsibilities, being upfront about what you’re feeling will help your partner navigate this phase with you.
Seek Professional Help
Medical professionals can provide essential support for both physical and emotional symptoms of perimenopause. A healthcare provider might recommend hormone therapy, over-the-counter treatments, or lifestyle changes such as dietary adjustments and exercise recommendations to manage discomfort.
If intense emotional struggles like depression or anxiety are affecting your daily functioning or relationships, consider working with a behavioral health specialist. These professionals can offer therapy, coping strategies, and emotional support, helping you feel more balanced and confident during the transition.
Embrace a New Normal
Perimenopause is a time of great change for your mind, body, and relationships. Instead of longing for life as it was before, try reframing this transition as an opportunity for growth.
“Get reacquainted with what you really enjoy and discover new ways to get closer with your partner,” Brandt-Griffith says. “By talking openly, supporting each other, and being patient, you can find your way to a deeper connection and a new kind of intimacy that works for both for you.”
