Essentia Health hits five-year milestone for community grants on the Iron Range

Essentia Health's mission is straightforward: We are called to make a healthy difference in people's lives.
That's why we do more than care for patients who come through our doors. We actively engage in the communities we serve and call home, aspiring to help people live safe, healthy and active lives.
Over the last five years, Essentia has donated more than $1 million in community contribution grants to 56 organizations on the Iron Range. This has directly impacted more than 416,000 people, as reported by the organizations that have received contributions from Essentia.
The partnerships highlight a shared spirit of collaboration.
“United Way of Northeastern Minnesota is proud to call Essentia a partner in helping Iron Range residents and communities thrive,” said Erin Shay, executive director of the United Way of Northeastern Minnesota. “For years, Essentia has invested time and resources into our organization – and given employees the opportunity to do the same – in a way that highlights our shared commitment to improving our neighbors’ well-being. Together, we’ve been able to make differences that matter while we continue to work toward a healthier, more vibrant future for our communities.”
These grants have funded more than $600,000 in economic stability through farmer’s markets, community gardens, the United Way, Habitat for Humanity and sustainability initiatives. Contributed funds also include $200,000 to support access to education and youth development through the Boys and Girls Club of Hibbing, programming at the Ely Folk School, the Minnesota Discovery Center and more.
One of the most fundamental aspects to living a healthy life is having a place to call home.
“When families purchase an affordable, accessible home through Habitat for Humanity, they can thrive in a healthy environment,” said Nathan Thompson, executive director of North St. Louis County Habitat for Humanity. “They no longer have to work two jobs or worry about how they will afford housing on top of clothing, food or educational opportunities. Financial stability allows them to make healthy choices and invest in their families’ well-being. Essentia’s support for Habitat’s mission means more local adults and children have access to what everyone deserves — a decent place to live."
By aligning community giving with social determinants of health, we aim to address the underlying factors that contribute to health disparities such as economic stability and access to education. This approach not only improves community well-being overall, but also leads to more sustainable health outcomes.
“At Essentia, we believe that our responsibility extends beyond the walls of our facilities,” said Sam Stone, administrator at Essentia Health-Virginia. “It’s not just about treating illnesses; it’s about fostering a supportive and thriving community where people can live their best lives. This commitment is at the heart of everything we do.”
