Recognizing the impact that housing stability has on individual health outcomes, Essentia Health and One Roof Community Housing are partnering on a program that will provide crucial support to prospective homebuyers in Duluth’s Central Hillside Neighborhood.

The Hillside Homeownership Program aims to reduce barriers to homeownership and promote community resilience. The collaboration will provide $15,000 forgivable down-payment assistance loans to 10 individuals or families purchasing a house in the Central Hillside. In addition to financial assistance, participants will have access to housing counseling services, educational workshops and resources to navigate the homebuying process successfully.

The loans will be available to anyone who meets certain income criteria, including Essentia employees. This will allow employees on Essentia’s downtown campus to live where they work, which is foundational to a vibrant neighborhood.

“We are thrilled to embark on this collaborative endeavor with One Roof Community Housing,” said Tonya Loken, community relations director at Essentia Health. “At Essentia Health, we understand that stable housing is fundamental to achieving optimal health and well-being. By offering down-payment assistance through this innovative program, we are not only helping individuals and families attain homeownership, but also investing in the long-term health and vitality of the neighborhood.”

The Hillside Homeownership Program represents a significant step toward advancing health equity. By addressing the root causes of housing insecurity, Essentia and One Roof aim to improve health outcomes, strengthen communities and create a pathway to homeownership.

“One Roof is excited to collaborate with Essentia in launching this impactful initiative,” stated Jeff Corey, executive director at One Roof. “For years, we have been dedicated to addressing housing challenges in our community, and this partnership allows us to expand our reach and make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and families seeking to achieve housing stability.”
