This one-night class is recommended before the birth of your baby. A certified Lactation Consultant will go over how to give your baby the best possible start with breastfeeding. We encourage your support person to also attend. There will be plenty of time during class to ask questions.
This class will cover:
- The benefits and management of exclusive breastfeeding.
- How to start breastfeeding within one hour of birth through the golden hours or skin to skin.
- Understanding when your baby is hungry and how to know they are getting enough to eat.
- The benefits of rooming-in.
- Highlights for your support person.
Breastfeeding Class is designed to prepare you for a successful and rewarding breastfeeding experience. You may attend this class even if you have not attended a Childbirth class. Class attendance is recommended before the birth of your baby.
Topics discussed include:
How your body initiates making milk.
The benefits and management of exclusive breastfeeding.
Benefits of skin-to-skin and the importance of initiating breastfeeding within the first 1-2 hours after birth.
Understanding your newborn’s feeding cues and latching.
Breastfeeding problems (i.e. engorgement, clogged ducts, mastitis, expressing breastmilk while away from baby).
Partners are also encouraged to attend this class; however, women may attend by themselves.
This class will be held in person, at Essentia Health Detroit Lakes, and remote via teams. You will get an email one week prior to the first day of class with instructions for both options.
