This series of 3 evening Childbirth Preparation classes is designed to help prepare you for the delivery of your baby. It is ideal to start taking this class when you are between 28 and 32 weeks pregnant, but may be taken at any point in your pregnancy.
Registration reserves space for mother and her partner.
Topics covered include:
- The process of birth
- Positioning and relaxation techniques for labor
- Role of support person during labor
- Discussion of various choices for mother during birth
- Interventions (Induction, pain medication options, Cesarean birth)
- Adjusting to parenthood
- Care of newborn
- How to initiate breastfeeding within one hour of birth (Sacred Hour and Skin-to-Skin)
- The Benefits of Breastfeeding
- Latching infant
- Birthing Center Tour
You may attend this class even if you have not attended a Childbirth class. It is designed to prepare you for a successful and rewarding breastfeeding experience. Class attendance is recommended before the birth of your baby.

How our body initiates making milk

The Benefits and Management of Exclusive Breastfeeding

Benefits of Skin-to-Skin and the importance of initiating breastfeeding within the first 1-2 hours after birth

Understanding your newborn’s feeding cues and latching

Breastfeeding problems (i.e. engorgement, clogged ducts, mastitis, expressing breastmilk while away from baby)
Partners are encouraged to attend this class with Mom; however mom may attend by herself.
This class will be held in person, at Essentia Health Detroit Lakes, and remote via teams. You will get an email one week prior to the first day of class with instructions for both options.
