If you need urologic surgery, Essentia's skilled urologists will perform your procedure and provide the necessary follow-up care. Our urologists treat all types of male and female urinary tract conditions in the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra, as well as conditions in the male reproductive system. They perform a wide range of surgical procedures, including vasectomy and circumcision.
A urologic surgeon is a urologist with specialized training in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of conditions of the male and female urinary tract, as well as the male reproductive organs.
Below is a list of urologic conditions and the related procedures that your surgeon may perform.
Whenever possible, Essentia surgeons treat your condition using advanced technologies and minimally invasive techniques. That means you’ll have less pain and scarring and a quicker recovery.
For more than a decade, Essentia has offered robotic-assisted urologic surgery at some of its hospitals. Robotic surgery involves the use of very sophisticated equipment to perform minimally invasive surgical procedures. One or two surgeons operate the robot during each procedure, and this robotic-assisted approach improves the surgeon's view, precision, and control. Robotic surgery has been proven to improve surgical outcomes.

(SPEECH)TRACY BRIGGS: For aging men, it's nearly as common as gray hair and wrinkles. According to the American Urological Association, more than half of men over the age of 60 have enlarged prostates. And at the age of 85, that number climbs to 90%.
(DESCRIPTION)Text, Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Prevalence. Two rows of 10 figures, one row on top of the other. On the top row labeled 60 plus, five figures are blue, five are gray. The bottom row labeled 85 plus has nine figures colored in blue and one in gray.
(SPEECH)Enlarged prostates can cause a number of urinary symptoms, including a weak stream, frequent or urgency in urination, getting up in the middle of the night to urinate, and a bladder that doesn't empty well.
(DESCRIPTION)Graphic of a cross-section of bladder and prostate. The Bladder is empty, and the urethra hangs below the bladder. A prostate surrounds the urethra. The urethra is narrowed where the prostate surrounds it, and it widens again at the base of the prostate. Text, Symptoms - weak stream, frequency, late-night urges, poor output.
(SPEECH)Essentia Health urologist Dr. Philip Wanzek in Fargo says the prostate is like a donut. And the urethra that carries urine runs right through the hole in the middle. PHILIP WANZEK: So as the prostate grows enlarged, the channel can become restricted and not be able to open up as well.

(SPEECH)TRACY BRIGGS: But a promising new technique is providing relief. Rezum is a steam therapy for men who have trouble urinating because of enlarged prostates. And Dr. Wanzek is the only physician in the state of North Dakota currently offering this procedure. Dr. Wanzek says they numb the prostate to ease discomfort and then inject steam for nine seconds at a time into the prostate with a small scope anywhere from six to 15 times. He says the heat from the steam is the weapon. PHILIP WANZEK: The tissue will dissolve, and the body will just reabsorb it over time. And eventually the channel inside the prostate will open up so that the urinary symptoms will improve. TRACY BRIGGS: Rezum is an outpatient procedure, so patients are able to go home shortly after the procedure. PHILIP WANZEK: It reduces symptoms by about 50%. And it'll increase the urinary stream by about 50% as well. So better stream, less frequency, less urgency over time. TRACY BRIGGS:

(SPEECH)Dr. Wanzek says just about any man with prostate-related urinary problems would benefit from Rezum. And studies have shown men who choose early intervention procedures like Rezum tend to do better in the long run than those who opt for medication alone. With this Essentia Health Medical Insight, I'm Tracy Briggs.
