Inpatient Vs. Outpatient Hospital Services
If you have a test or procedure performed at a hospital but are not admitted, you’re an outpatient. Common outpatient procedures may include X-rays, labs, and emergency room visits. If your doctor admits you to the hospital for an overnight stay, you’re typically an inpatient.
One exception to this is if your doctor places you on observation status. In this case, you may stay overnight in the hospital but are still considered an outpatient. If you’re a Medicare patient, your status can affect your coverage. Visit Medicare.gov to learn more.

Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center owes much to its pioneers. After more than 125 years, we’re seeing patients from across northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
1881 | Benedicitine Sisters, who later founded the Monastery of St. Scholastica, arrive in Duluth.
1888 | St. Mary’s Hospital is established at 20th Avenue West and 3rd Street in Duluth’s West End neighborhood by a small group of Benedictine Sisters.
1892 | The Duluth Community of Benedictine Sisters is founded—committed to establishing a health care ministry in Duluth.
1911 | A larger St. Mary’s Hospital building opens at 404 East 3rd Street.
1997 | St. Mary’s merges with Duluth Clinic to form the SMDC Health System.
2004 | Essentia Health is formed as the parent corporation of the SMDC and Benedictine health systems.
2010 | Essentia fully integrates its health systems to create efficiencies and reduce health care costs. St. Mary’s Medical Center becomes Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center.
Today, Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center is one of northern Minnesota’s largest and most specialized medical centers. Through the leadership and sponsorship of the St. Scholastica Monastery, St. Mary’s Medical Center continues to carry on the spirit of the Duluth Benedictines.
