Meet the residency director and coordinator of the Essentia Health-St. Joseph's Medical Center Pharmacy Practice Residency Program and get to know our current residents.
Residency Program Director, Essentia Health Pharmacy Services
Email Eric Gangl.
Eric Gangl received his Doctor of Pharmacy (2002) from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. After graduation, he practiced as a clinical pharmacist for 3 years at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, Minnesota, and became their clinical coordinator in 2004. In 2005 he moved to Brainerd, Minnesota, where he has continued practicing at Essentia Health St. Joseph's Medical Center as a clinical pharmacist. He was in that role for 10 years before becoming Clinical Lead in 2015 and Clinical Manager/Residency Program Director in 2018.
His primary practice is in intensive care, cardiology, and emergency medicine. He serves as preceptor for the residents in critical care.
Eric grew up in Nashwauk, Minnesota. In his free time he enjoys hockey, golfing, fishing, and coaching/watching his kid's sports activities.

Email John Grygelko.
John Grygelko received his Doctor of Pharmacy (2013) from the University of Minnesota-Duluth. After graduation, he completed his PGY-1 Acute Care Residency at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, MN. Following his residency, he worked at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center for several years. During this time, he obtained his BCPS and advanced the pharmacy profession through engagement in the local MSHP chapter and by precepting pharmacy students. He then moved to the Brainerd in 2017, and became the residency program coordinator in 2019.
His primary practice is in intensive care and general medicine. He serves as preceptor for the residents in the orientation and general medicine rotations. His interest in individualized patient care drew him to obtain a pharmacogenomics certificate through ASHP in 2019.
John grew up in Greenfield, Minnesota. In his free time, he enjoys reading insightful books, exercising and enjoying the outdoors. He cherishes spending time with his wife Jen, their wonderful daughter Amara, and their yellow lab (Rosie).

Email Thad Bergh.
Thad Bergh is originally from Havana, North Dakota and graduated with his PharmD from North Dakota State University in 2020. His professional interests include ambulatory care, critical care, and student development. What he values most about the St. Joseph’s residency program is the variety of elective options available, the focus on evidence-based medicine and practice improvement, and the genuine camaraderie and clinical expertise of the pharmacy team.
In his spare time, Thad enjoys golfing, spending time with family and friends, reading a good book, and relaxing at the piano. His favorite things to do in the Brainerd area include golfing, getting caffeinated at local coffee shops, and spending a sunny day at the lake.
Email Courtney Knebel.
Courtney Knebel is originally from Duluth, MN, and graduated with her PharmD from Concordia University Wisconsin in 2020. Her professional interests include mental health, and neurology. She was drawn to the residency program because of the collaborative atmosphere of the pharmacy team, the variety of experiences, and the interdisciplinary approach to patient-centered care.
In her spare time, Courtney enjoys spending time with her family, husband and dog, star gazing, and exploring the outdoors. Her favorite things to do in the Brainerd area include canoeing local lakes, visiting local coffee shops, and enjoying winter activities like snowshoeing.
