Suicide in a Large Rural Population

Addressing the increasing challenge of suicide in rural areas requires a clear understanding of the scope of the issue regionally, and of the characteristics and risk factors unique to a rural population. This retrospective case-control study aims to describe the Essentia Health patient population in Minnesota with suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, or death by suicide. Risk factors for suicide attempts and deaths, including in relation to COVID-19, will be identified, and prior year treatment utilization for patients with suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, or death by suicide will be examined compared to controls. Understanding the risk factors and the outcomes of suicide ideation, attempts, and deaths will inform patient care, identify areas for improvement, and enable the development of tailored intervention efforts at Essentia Health.
