Identification of prevalence of osteoporosis and low bone mass in Essentia Health Osteoporosis Program database and assessment of prevalence of low impact hip fractures due to falls, January 2008 through June 2015

Objective

This study will review retrospective electronic health record data from Essentia Health to identify characteristics of patients at risk for low-impact hip fractures, and inform the development of infrastructure necessary to assist in identifying patients for primary and secondary prevention. Two groups will be reviewed: 1) patients referred for DXA scans to test for osteoporosis and osteopenia; and 2) patients age 65+ treated by the St. Mary’s Medical Center trauma service and other Essentia Health Duluth Clinic clinicians for hip fractures, with a focus on low-impact hip fractures.
