Appendectomy is the most common emergency general surgical operation performed in the U.S., and it is most commonly performed for acute appendicitis (AA), perforated appendicitis (PA), and gangrenous appendicitis (GA). This prospective observational study, being conducted through the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma Multicenter Trials group, aims to confirm or refute the concept that AA, PA and GA represent different time points and degrees of severity of a single disease entity. The lead investigators hypothesize that they are three distinct disease entities with clinically distinct at-risk populations, clinical presentations, treatment recommendations and outcome expectations. Results from this study will inform the clinical care of patients with this common condition.
The Lead Principal Investigator is Dr. Daniel Yeh, University of Miami. Dr. Kristin Colling is the Site Principal Investigator.
