Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is characterized by the disruption of normal brain functioning due to blunt force, jolt or penetrating injury to the head. One of the research priorities of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Injury Center is to improve the identification, assessment, and management of TBI, as it is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in the U.S. The primary goals of this retrospective observational study are to describe the epidemiology of TBI resulting in hospitalization at Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center over a 13-year period, compare rural and urban TBI characteristics and outcomes, and help guide injury prevention priorities for ongoing and future primary prevention efforts.
Dr. Kristin Colling is the Principal Investigator. Melissa Harry, PhD, Linda Vogel, RN, and Dr. Steven Eyer are Co-Investigators.
