Individuals age 65 and older constitute the most rapidly growing segment of the U.S. population, and this growth is reflected in the changing demographics of trauma patients. At Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center, approximately 40% of all trauma patients are age 65 and older. Traumatic injury in the elderly can trigger a decline in health marked by poor functional recovery and impaired quality of life. Addressing the increasing challenge of geriatric trauma requires a clear understanding of the characteristics and risk factors unique to older adults, and highlights the need for research on the optimal management of this population. This retrospective epidemiologic study aims to characterize the geriatric trauma population at Essentia Health–St. Mary’s Medical Center, identify risk factors for poor outcomes, and conduct subgroup analyses with patients with a frailty score on record or with fall-related injuries. The results of this study will help guide future research and intervention efforts for this vulnerable population.
