Many previous studies have demonstrated that elderly patients have higher rates of mortality following traumatic injury, however very little is known about the long-term effects trauma injuries have on their physical, mental, and cognitive health. This prospective mixed-methods, non-interventional study will collect primary and secondary data for elderly trauma patients admitted to Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center. Using a validated patient-reported outcome measure and qualitative interviews, the study investigators aim to define what long-term recovery means to elderly patients after traumatic injury, and identify patient and injury related factors associated with worse outcomes and poor recovery. This will serve as a preliminary study to gain knowledge about decision making in elderly trauma patients and the effects of traumatic injury on long-term patient-reported outcome measures, and will serve as a feasibility study for assessing patient-reported outcomes in elderly trauma patients.
Dr. Kristin Colling is the Principal Investigator. Stephen Waring, PhD, and Melissa Harry, PhD, are Co-Investigators.
