Trauma Transfer Patients: Evaluating Effects of ED Pitstop Protocol in a Level 1 Rural Trauma Center

The procedure for transferring trauma patients to Essentia Health- St. Mary’s Medical Center(EH-SMMC) can effect emergency department (ED) workflow and patient outcomes. EH-SMMC implemented a “selective ED pitstop protocol” requiring all trauma patients evaluated by non-Essentia Health emergency physicians be transferred ED to ED and be evaluated in an ED Pitstop.  However, because EH-SMMC still had a high rate of direct admissions of trauma patients, a new “system-wide ED pitstop protocol” was implemented.  This retrospective observational review of all trauma patients transferred to EH-SMMC will compare changes in ED length of stay over each protocol time period, identify rates of complications in patients either admitted directly or transferred through the ED, and identify areas for future improvement.
