The purpose of this study is to determine whether QuikClot and Combat Application Tourniquets are effective at controlling major bleeding in the civilian prehospital environment and are associated with low morbidity. The specific aims of this study are to 1) characterize the efficacy of QuikClot hemostatic gauze and Combat application Tourniquet on civilian patients with severe hemorrhage, and 2) characterize morbidities associated with the use of QuikClot hemostatic gauze and the Combat Application Tourniquet in this population. Data on patients transported by Mayo Clinic Medical Transport to EH SMMC will be collected by review of the electronic medical record. Data will be collected about the mechanism of injury and pre-hospital transport, hospital course, operative interventions and any associated complications. The research team for this study includes Dr. Steven Eyer, and Dr. Scott Zietlow.
