Early Mobility in the ICU

Objective

The purpose of this study is to measure the effectiveness of an early progressive mobility protocol in the ICU. The Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center Foundation funded the purchase of early mobility chairs required for the implementation of this protocol. Specific aims include: extracting data related to clinical outcomes, 2) comparing pre and post protocol patients and adjust for factors such as age, gender, and diagnoses that would be expected to influence outcomes, 3) conducting a brief interview for nurses, physical therapists and patients regarding their experience with the early mobility protocol and chairs. Outcomes being measured in this study will include the patient’s length of stay, mechanical ventilation days, ventilator-associated ulcers, unplanned readmission, and number and severity of falls.

Mary Gerchman-Smith is Principal Investigator. Cathy McCarthy, PhD, Lindal Vogel, and Melissa Harry, PhD, are Co-Investigators on this study. Colleen Renier is the study biostatistician.
