When Grief is Complicated

Dr. Bonnie Gorscak, Licensed Psychologist, has served as the Senior Trainer and Supervisor with the Center for Complicated Grief at the Columbia University School of Social Work since 2012. Additionally, she has provided outpatient psychotherapy to grieving adults and families for more than 25 years. Her publications include Finding Your Way to Change: How the power of Motivational Interviewing can reveal what you want and help you to get there (2015), and “The syndrome of traumatic grief and its treatment” in Psychological effects of catastrophic disasters: Group Approaches to treatment. (2006)

 

This one-day workshop is designed to provide an understanding of complicated grief and Complicated Grief Treatment (CGT), an evidence-based grief therapy. We include strategies and procedures for screening, diagnosis and assessment of individuals with complicated grief and discuss how to differentiate this condition from major depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. We provide an overview of Complicated Grief Treatment (CGT) and introduce some practical therapeutic interventions that you can use in your work with grieving individuals and families.

Program objectives

Upon Completion of this seminar, participants will be able to:

 

  1. Conduct an assessment for complicated grief
  2. Identify differences between CG, PTSD and MDD
  3. Describe the framework and goals of CGT
  4. Explain the concepts of acute, integrated and complicated grief
  5. Explain the use of a grief monitoring diary and other therapeutic strategies for addressing complicated grief.
