Description

Mourning and Meaning:  Facilitating Deep Change in Grief

Robert Neimeyer, Ph.D. is Professor Emeritus of the dept. of Psychology, University of Memphis maintains an active consulting and coaching practice and also directs the Portland Institute for Loss and Transition. The author of over 30 books and 500 articles and chapters and a popular workshop presenter, he has been given a lifetime achievement award by the Association for Death Education and Counseling.

At a time when humanity is swimming in a sea of loss, whether arising from bereavement or the collateral damage to once secure roles and resources resulting from the pandemic, developing deeper competencies in working with grief is essential. This presentation is designed to offer practical guidelines and to model interventions that support this goal for in-person counseling or virtual teletherapy. Beginning with a conceptualization of grieving as a process of reaffirming or reconstructing a world of meaning that has been challenged by loss, we will also explore ways to help clients who remain mired in anguishing and life-limiting grief despite your best efforts and their own genuine suffering.

 Program Objectives:

  • List four guidelines for effective use of technology to enhance professionalism in telehealth
  • Identify advantages of online therapy with relevance to the bereaved
  • Distinguish between states of therapeutic presence and absence, on the part of both the client and therapist
  • Describe procedures for analogical listening to the somatic felt sense of grief
  • Summarize key concepts in Eckers Coherence Therapy and their relevance for grief therapy
  • Identify markers of the emergence of “pro-symptom positions” that invite radical inquiry
  • Use body orientated imagery to explore sources of resistance to change in grief
  • Utilize visualization and symptom deprivation to encounter the emotional truth of the symptom and promote its integration

A certificate of attendance for 6 ceus will be included along with digital training materials. Approval has been granted for 6 credits from  MN Board of Social Workers and has been requested from the MN Board of Psychology. Early bird registration before November 19 is $120. Registration after that time is $140.
