Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital-Superior named top critical access hospital

Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital-Superior has been named one of the top critical access hospitals in the United States by the Chartis Center for Rural Health, a group that aims to improve health care around the world.

Essentia is recognized as one of the top 100 critical access hospitals as compiled by the Chartis Center. The organization assesses performance in eight areas: inpatient market share, outpatient market share, quality, outcomes, patient perspective, cost, charge and financial efficiency.

The designation reinforces Essentia’s core belief of having a meaningful presence in the communities we serve.

“We were extremely pleased to learn that St. Mary’s Hospital-Superior was one of the recipients of this honor,” hospital administrator Kim Pearson said. “It’s a validation of the comments we get on a daily basis about the staff who work in Superior and the excellent care that they give.”

“Critical access hospital” is a designation given to eligible rural hospitals by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The designation is designed to reduce the financial vulnerability of rural hospitals and improve access to health care by keeping essential services in rural communities.

“Our Essentia campus is truly a ‘hub’ in our city, not only for medical care but also for a sense of community belonging,” Pearson said.
