Published on July 10, 2020
Essentia Health’s visitor policy has been updated to protect patients and staff from the transmission of COVID-19 while also keeping in mind the emotional well-being of our patients as we see an increase in COVID-19 in the communities we serve.
Beginning immediately, one visitor will be allowed per patient, per day at Essentia Health facilities in Duluth. Visitors are permitted between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily.
“It is important that we limit the number of people within our facilities as much as possible due to the potential for COVID-19 transmission from both symptomatic and asymptomatic people,” said Dr. Anne Stephen, Essentia Health Chief Medical Officer for Essentia Health’s East Market. “We have a responsibility to protect our patients; many of those we are privileged to serve are ill, some have compromised immune systems and others are at high risk for complications if they become infected with COVID-19.”
This policy applies to all clinic appointments and inpatient and procedural patient care areas, including the emergency department.
Adult COVID-19 patients will not be allowed visitors except in end-of-life situations. Some exceptions in the case of critically unstable patients, end-of-life situations and patients for whom a support person has been determined to be essential to the care and safety of the patient will apply.
Important: All visitors for patients at either Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center or Essentia Health-Duluth must now enter St. Mary’s Medical Center through the Red Ramp skywalk, at the corner of Fourth Avenue East and East Fifth Street, to access screening.
All those who enter an Essentia facility will undergo a screening process that includes taking your temperature and asking you questions. Visitors will be required to wear a mask at all times inside the facility, frequently clean their hands, remain in the room of the patient they are visiting and practice social distancing.
This policy will be implemented throughout the remainder of Essentia Health facilities, including hospitals in Superior, Sandstone, Virginia and Deer River, on Monday, July 13.
