Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center ranked fourth-best hospital in the state

The U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals” list was released this week, and Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center is ranked fourth-best among 140 hospitals evaluated in Minnesota.

St. Mary’s Medical Center is the top-ranked hospital in Northeastern Minnesota, a list that includes five other Essentia facilities in the top 10.

“This is an outstanding honor, and it validates the compassionate and high-quality care that our colleagues deliver every single day,” said Janice Schade, senior vice president of operations for St. Mary’s Medical Center. “They work tirelessly on behalf of their patients, and it’s so rewarding to see them recognized.”

St. Mary’s Medical Center was rated as “high performing” — scoring 5 out of 5 — in one adult specialty (colon cancer surgery) and seven procedures and conditions. Those are:

  • Heart failure
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm repair
  • Heart bypass surgery
  • Knee replacement surgery
  • Hip replacement surgery
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Colon cancer surgery

The Mayo Clinic in Rochester was ranked the top hospital in the state and nation. In Minnesota, it was followed by Abbott Northwestern in Minneapolis and St. Cloud Hospital.

In compiling its list, the U.S. News & World Report evaluated data on almost 5,000 hospitals in 26 medical specialties and 10 standard procedures and conditions. The rankings are based on each hospital’s patient outcomes.
