Essentia Health St. Mary’s-Detroit Lakes earns ACR accreditation

Essentia Health has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Magnetic resonance imaging of the breast offers valuable information about many breast conditions that may not be obtained by other imaging modalities, such as mammography or ultrasound.

The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Parameters and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report that can be used for continuous practice improvement.

“The ability to offer our patients the option of advanced imaging is a game changer and this accreditation showcases the excellent care that is second to none provided right here in Detroit Lakes. Patients don’t need to travel to other facilities for their care,” shares Dr. Ben Smith.

The first breast MRI was done in Detroit Lakes in March 2019 and the purchase of the MRI coil was part of the fundraising efforts by the Essentia Health St. Mary’s Foundation. “The foundation is so grateful to our community who gave generously and made it possible to purchase this MRI coil. It allows us to offer more services and procedures close to home,” explains LeAnn Mouw, development director.

In addition to breast MRIs for screenings and concerns, the facility is also able to offer MRI guided breast biopsies.
