Published on January 31, 2019
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is an age-associated enlargement of the prostate gland that can cause difficulty urinating. It affects more than 3 million men in the U.S. each year. Essentia Health now offers patients suffering from BPH a new procedure called UroLift.
“The most common complaints I hear from men suffering from BPH is it taking a long time to empty the bladder, urinating frequently and having to get up a lot at night to go to the bathroom,” says Essentia Urologist Dr. Travis Moncrief. “The condition frequently does not allow patients to do what they normally enjoy because they are constantly heading to the bathroom and are sleep deprived from getting up at night.”
UroLift is performed in the doctor’s office or under light sedation using tiny implants to permanently hold open the obstructed pathway that has blocked urine flow. Most patients return home immediately and experience a speedy recovery. “The UroLift is so attractive as an option because it allows an improvement in patients’ symptoms with minimal side effects,” says Dr. Moncrief.
Until recently, men wanting the one-time, minimally invasive solution had to travel to the Twin Cities. Since Essentia began offering it, about 50 UroLift procedures have been done by Dr. Moncrief and his colleagues, Urologists Dr. Nathan Hoffman, Dr. Jeffrey Engelsgjerd and Dr. Martin Grune.
“We are proud to offer this procedure locally, so patients do not need to travel great distances to have it done,” says Dr. Moncrief. “They usually are pleased that they can get the medical care they need right in their own local community.”
Dr. Moncrief says he chose urology because he’s able to have a profound impact on patients’ quality of life.
“The field of medicine has allowed me to apply my love of the sciences to helping patients overcome health ailments that limit their ability to enjoy life,” he says. “I find great reward in being a part of this process for my patients.”
Essentia Health is the only health care system north of the Twin Cities offering UroLift. The procedure is covered by most insurance companies. To learn more, visit Urologic Surgery.
