Summer safety day is celebrated in Virginia

It’s summer, when children boat and bike with their families, savoring the season’s favorite activities. It’s also the time to be vigilant about their safety. Drowning consistently ranks among the top causes of accidental death for children, according to the Minnesota Department of Health. Biking can be also as dangerous. More children ages 5-14 are seen in emergency rooms for injuries related to biking than any other sport, says Jenna Ballinger, an Essentia Health community health specialist.

This month, Essentia Health will team up with the farmers market, Virginia Market Square, for Summer Safety Day – a free event from 2:30-5 p.m. Thursday, July 18, at 250 N. Fourth Ave. W. in Virginia. Parents or guardians can get either get a free life jacket or a free bike helmet, while supplies last, in children’s or youth sizes. Essentia employees will be on hand to help properly fit the life jackets and bike helmets. Safety information will also be available.

“Bike helmets keep you safe. They are the single most effective safety device available to reduce head injury and death from bicycle crashes,” Ballinger says.

And whether your child is swimming, boating or just playing in the water, life jackets can prevent injuries and fatalities in our “Land of 10,000 Lakes.”
