Essentia Health unveils new procedure for heartburn relief

A new approach to providing relief from heartburn has arrived in the Northland.

Late last month, Essentia Health performed a pair of anti-reflux procedures to implant the LINX® Reflux Management System, a first for the region.

Reflux, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), is a chronic disease in which acid and bile flow back from the stomach into the esophagus, putting the esophagus at risk of being damaged. And while the most common symptom is heartburn, reflux also can result in chest pain, difficulty swallowing, asthma, regurgitation, cough, sore throat, hoarseness and shortness of breath.

The LINX® is a small device — about the size of a quarter — that strengthens the body’s natural barrier against acid reflux by augmenting the lower esophageal sphincter. Simple and minimally invasive, the procedure to implant begins to have a positive impact immediately.

The LINX® system was approved by the FDA in 2012 and has been implanted in more than 17,000 patients worldwide. Proven benefits include reducing dependence on daily GERD medication, as well as eliminating regurgitation and heartburn.
