Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital-Superior designated Level IV Trauma Center

Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital-Superior has been designated as a Level IV trauma center by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. Level IV facilities provide stabilization and advanced trauma life support before patient transfer to a Level I or II facility.

The designation indicates St. Mary’s is providing the best possible treatment to trauma patients. “The St. Mary’s-Superior Emergency Department staff have worked hard this past year to obtain certification,” says Nursing Director Kim Pearson. “This has required additional training, development of a trauma log and implementation of several process improvement projects. I’m grateful for all of the work that everyone put forward on this.”

Trauma claims the lives of thousands of Wisconsin residents each year. States with trauma systems have seen survival rates increase by 15 to 20 percent. For a seriously injured person, the time between sustaining an injury and receiving care can be a critical determinant of survival. The system ensures patients are delivered to the closest appropriate hospital matching the resources to the needs of the injured patient.

Wisconsin has 128 potential hospitals participating in its voluntary trauma system, with 9 percent verified as American College of Surgeons Level I or II and 78 percent designated Level III or IV. Learn more here:
