Essentia Health Living Center honored

Quality Indicators Ranking
Essentia Health Living Center in Fosston received a five-star ranking for clinical quality indicators in the latest Minnesota Department of Human Services and Minnesota Department of Health Nursing Home Report Card. This is the highest rank possible. Quality indicators are a measure of clinical quality of care derived from a comprehensive assessment of every nursing facility resident. The rating is updated quarterly and Essentia Health Living Center has received five-star rankings in the first two quarters of the year.

Antibiotic Stewardship Honor Roll
Essentia Health Living Center has also received the 2019 Gold Award in the Minnesota Antibiotic Stewardship Honor Roll through the Minnesota Department of Health. Essentia Health Living Center has demonstrated commitment, implemented evidence-based actions, and advanced antibiotic stewardship in Minnesota through external collaboration.

The Gold Award is the highest level of recognition attainable. In addition to the requirements of the bronze and silver level awards, gold level facilities are recognized for looking beyond their facility to practice antibiotic stewardship in a collaborative way.

“Collaboration to make our residents safer is a core part of ongoing training for all levels of staff within Essentia Health Living Center. We hold an annual skills fair with a variety of staff from various facilities where we present information on antibiotic stewardship in an interactive environment,” says Lori Hand, RN clinical coordinator.

Antibiotics are powerful tools for fighting and preventing infections. However, widespread use of antibiotics has resulted in an alarming increase in antibiotic-resistant infections. Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria change in a way that reduces the effectiveness of drugs designed to cure or prevent infections. While antibiotic-resistant infections increase, there are very few new therapeutic options for the treatment of bacterial infections. Treatment of bacterial infections are becoming increasingly limited, expensive and often more toxic.

Infection Prevention
In addition, Essentia Health Living Center has been named an Infection Prevention and Control Data Champion. This recognition comes from successful participation in the national Nursing Home C. difficile Initiative. The initiative aimed to understand more clearly how often the bacteria c. diff causes infections in nursing home residents.

The living center accurately and consistently collected and tracked its c. diff data for each month and submitted it to a national healthcare safety network database.

This work will help to identify better infection reporting and ultimately, better care and quality of life for nursing home residents.

The work around patient quality as shown by these recognitions exemplifies the high level of care received by residents at Essentia Health Living Center. All staff within the organization work to live out Essentia Health’s mission to make a healthy difference in people’s lives. The work also showcases Essentia’s values of quality, hospitality, respect, joy, justice, stewardship and teamwork.
