Employees support projects at Essentia Health St. Mary’s

An employee giving group has made significant contributions to the Essentia Health St. Mary’s Foundation. This employee group called ROOTS, is made up of employees in Detroit Lakes and surrounding areas. The name of the employee group was taken from a Llan Shamir poem, Advice from a Tree and reminds you, “be content with your natural beauty, drink plenty of water, let your limbs sway and dance in the breezes, be flexible, remember your roots.” The employees who support the foundation through their giving are the roots.

Since its inception in 2004, ROOTS has raised more than $765,000 for a wide variety of items to enhance the care, safety and comfort of patients and families. Some of these items include:

  • EMS UTV and backboards
  • Cardiac treadmill
  • Urgent Care blanket warmers
  • Bereavement bed in OB for parents who have lost a child
  • Ceiling lifts
  • Hospital consultation rooms
  • Oak Crossing remodel
  • Portable monitors
  • Pediatric therapy gate
  • Assisted living gazebo and curtains
  • Emergency department and imaging remodel
  • Circle of Life program
  • End of life comfort care for families
  • Wireless access in various facilities
  • Employee fitness room
  • Department break room updates
  • BiPap machine
  • Handicap door access
  • Home Health INR (home monitoring system)
  • Therapy changing tables

“Our employees are truly a generous group of people; they are willing to share and be part of the bigger picture – the Foundation – that does some amazing things for those we serve,” explains Jackie McKenzie, ROOTS committee chair. Currently, 81 percent of employees support ROOTS. McKenzie continues, “When we share that success with others who are considering donating to the Foundation, they are impressed with this level of support from our own employees.”

One key to the success, according to McKenzie, is sharing what the money raised is used for and the fact that it focuses on improving our patient and resident experience as well as employee’s work environment.
