Essentia Health St. Mary’s-Detroit Lakes will present its second DAISY award on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at 7:30 a.m. in the hospital cafeteria.
The award presentation will feature special guest, Melissa Barnes, the DAISY Award’s vice president of operations and regional program director as well as sister-in-law of Patrick Barnes, whom the DAISY award was created to honor.
Media are invited to attend this special awards presentation where the winning nurse will be announced.
The DAISY Award is for extraordinary nurses and honors the super-human work nurses do for patients and families every day. Created in 1999, the award was created in memory of Patrick Barnes. Patrick died from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura,(ITP), an autoimmune disease. During his hospitalization, the Barnes family said they experienced the best of nursing. While they expected great clinical care, they did not expect the way his nurses delivered that care – the kindness and compassion they showed every day. The Barnes family remembers how these nurses truly helped them through the darkest hours of their lives, with soft voices of hope and strong loving hugs that to this day, they all still feel.
Nurses are nominated by patients, family members, co-workers, physicians or staff-anyone who experiences or observes extraordinary compassionate care being provided by a nurse.
