Want to avoid long term chronic diseases & have a healthier lifestyle? Participate in a free research-based prevention program

With more than 86 million Americans diagnosed with pre-diabetes, education and support are vital tools to prevent the disease. That's why Crow Wing Energized offers community education through the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Diabetes Prevention Program to help achieve health and vitality with our communities.

Pre-diabetes means your blood sugar level is higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed with diabetes. The prevention program helps participants make changes, such as eating healthier, incorporating physical activity into their daily lives and improving problem-solving and coping skills. Classes are led by certified lifestyle change coaches using evidence-based curriculum developed by the CDC.

The program has been in place in the community since 2012,with more than 100 community volunteers certified as health coaches to teach lifestyle change classes and give back to their communities. "Our coordinator, Jackie Thurlow, continues to follow up on referrals from area physicians, food shelves, faith communities and local employees partners," says Cassie Carey, who serves as the Crow Wing Energized Coordinator. "We get feedback from participants, their family members and even the volunteer coaches on how this program has affected their lives in more than just a smaller number on the scale."

CDC statistics show participants who lose 5 to 7 percent of their weight cut the risk for developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent. Of the 402 class participants in the local area over the last year, 53 percent met that goal.

For people looking to make lifestyle changes to live healthier lives who may not know where to start to be successful, the program provides the skills and personal support to help participants – especially those at risk for diabetes – make small changes that last a lifetime.

Essentia Health, in partnership with Crow Wing Energized, offers this year long diabetes prevention program at no cost to the community to help people  make the healthy choice the easy choice.

Learn how to create a healthier lifestyle and prevent diabetes in a 22 session evidence-based diabetes prevention program.
