Six months in, new general surgeon is adjusting to Iron Range life

Ryan Watson, General Surgery

It’s been a very busy few months since General Surgeon Dr. Ryan Watson joined the Essentia Health-Virginia Clinic in Virginia, Minnesota.  Since his start, the board-certified general surgeon has performed a variety of surgeries and emergency surgeries as well.

“We have a busy practice and I routinely am doing procedures such as endoscopy, hernia repairs, various intestinal resections, which is where a portion of the small bowel is removed and cholecystectomy, or gall bladder removal surgery,” Dr. Watson says. “I have been involved in a number of unusual or complex cases, as well.”

Dr. Watson earned a medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He completed a residency in general surgery at Gundersen Lutheran in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He was drawn to Virginia for the outdoor recreation, scenic beauty and the people who make up the community.

“One of the most enjoyable things about working here is the wonderful staff and co-workers at my clinic and in the hospital,” he adds.  “Everyone is wonderful to work with.  My patients are terrific as well.  I think many of them are surprised by how young I look.”

Dr. Watson is married to Randali, and the couple have three children, 6-year-old Gwendolyn, also known as Gwen; 4-year-old Penellepi, or Ella; and 2-year-old William, whose nickname is Liam.  The family also has a Labradoodle named Gilly.

“My family and I really enjoy the area,” Dr. Watson adds. “We have been so busy, and we are still exploring all the fun things to do in the region.  We’re hoping to teach our children to ski this winter at Giants Ridge.”
