Essentia Health-Holy Trinity Hospital in Graceville has awarded their first ever DAISY Award to Sara Fuhrman, registered nurse. Fuhrman was nominated by patient, Betty Husby. In her nomination, Husby says, “Sara Fuhrman is a very caring, considerate nurse and person. She knows your needs each time you are admitted to the hospital. She has a heart of gold.” In addition, Husby notes that she makes sure all your needs are taken care of your whole visit, has a wonderful bedside manner. She always has a smile and a wonderful attitude. Husby goes on to say, “We have a good nursing staff in our hospital but above all, she is the most outstanding nurse.”

Director of Nursing Jill Johnsrud, said, “We are excited to participate in The DAISY Award program. Nurses are heroes every day. It’s important that our nurses know their work is highly valued, and The DAISY Foundation provides a way for us to do that.” Johnsrud commends Sara for her work saying, “Sara goes above and beyond for patients and co-workers. She is very deserving of this award as we are grateful to have her as a part of our team.”

The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit organization, established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, by members of his family. Patrick died in 1999 at age 33 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.

Bonnie Barnes, president and co-founder of The Daisy Foundation says, “When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human, extraordinary, compassionate work they do. The kind of work the nurses at Essentia Health are called on to do every day epitomized the purpose of The DAISY Award.”

Patients and staff can nominate nurses for The DAISY Award by filling out a nomination form found at the hospital.
