Essentia Health Sponsors Complimentary Diabetes Prevention Program in Deer River

Essentia Health is helping combat diabetes in Itasca County with a nationally recognized program for area residents. The National Diabetes Prevention Program starts at 4 p.m., Monday, Oct. 22, at the Goodall Resource Center, located at 1006 Comstock Drive, Deer River.

The National Diabetes Prevention Program is 12-month group-based program that is set up to help participants lose weight with healthy eating habits, increased physical activity, reduced stress and much more. A trained lifestyle coach will lead the program and help participants learn the skills that help them lose weight and reduce their risk of developing type-2 diabetes.

Research funded by the National Institutes of Health shows that the program has been shown to reduce the number of cases of type 2 diabetes by as much as 58 percent. The reduction was even greater at 71 percent among adults aged 60 years or older.

“Our goal is 5-7 percent weight loss in 6 to 12 months,” says Kim Deihl, a dietitian at Essentia Health-Deer River. “Reducing your body weight by as little as 7 percent can offer tremendous benefits for people at risk of diabetes.”

To join the class, you must have a diagnosis of pre-diabetes or be at risk for diabetes. To find out if you are at risk take the quiz:
