Essentia Health offers walk-in pediatric appointments

Busy parents looking for convenience and accessibility will find both in new walk-in care in the Essentia Health-Duluth Clinic’s Pediatrics Department. Pediatric physicians and advanced practitioners are available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays on the third floor of the First Street Building, 420 E. 1st St., Duluth.  No appointment is necessary.

“This is a unique service we can offer our families – where they have easy access to our specialty care,” says Pediatrician Dr. Lori DeFrance. “It’s not available in any other setting. Parents want their children to be seen by pediatrics providers for a reason. They’re looking for our expertise. It’s exciting to make this time available.”

Walk-in care includes routine ailments, such as coughs, sore throats, ear pain, bug bites, tick bites, rashes, fevers, vomiting or diarrhea. Your child also can get a well-child check, immunizations or camp and sports physicals.
“Walk-in care is ideal for the parent who is called by school or day care when their child may be running a fever or throwing up. There’s no need to call. They can bring their child straight to us,” Dr. DeFrance says.

Pediatric walk-in care does not handle emergencies, but resources are available at Urgent Care in the Duluth Clinic Third Street Building or the Emergency Department at St. Mary’s Medical Center.

Pediatric services also have been expanded at Essentia’s Hermantown Clinic, where parents can make appointments for their children from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday. “It’s all about giving families good access to care and Saturdays give them an extra day. It accommodates their busy schedules,” Dr. DeFrance says.  The Hermantown Clinic is located at 4855 W. Arrowhead Rd., Hermantown.

“We know that accessibility and convenience are important to families with busy lives,” says Operations Manager Tara Talarico, who works with the Pediatrics team. “Walk-in care can accommodate their needs. And our pediatric providers have expertise in caring for children.”
