Essentia Health’s mission is to make a healthy difference in people’s lives and one of the best ways to do that is to help smokers quit the habit. “We surveyed communities where we have hospitals and one of the recurring health issues in just about every area was tobacco cessation,” says Jill Doberstein, who heads up Essentia’s tobacco cessation efforts.
But quitting smoking is one of the most difficult things to do, did you know it takes seven attempts on average to quit for good? To tackle the challenge, Essentia hired a team from the Mayo Clinic to train Essentia’s certified tobacco treatment specialists in the most in-depth proven course in the nation to help people stop smoking.
“The best way to quit smoking is one-on-one counseling, combined with medications, and those could be nicotine patches, lozenges, or prescription medications,” Doberstein adds. “Because of the recent training, we now offer hands-down the best program for smokers to quit.”
Essentia’s tobacco cessation specialists are available at your local clinic, which is important, so smokers won’t have to travel hours to receive help. Another tool in the resource box against tobacco is a new toll-free number for patients to call and schedule a counseling session. Previously, counseling was done as part of a primary care referral.
“This is critical, because once a smoker makes the decision to try and quit, we can schedule an appointment for them right away, so they don’t have to wait for a call back to see a tobacco cessation specialist,” Doberstein adds.
Smokers may want to consider joining others on Thursday, November 15 which marks the annual Great American Smoke Out. The American Cancer Society annual celebrates the Great American Smokeout as a day to challenge people to make a plan to or actually stop using tobacco.
When smokers begin to decrease their tobacco intake, Essentia also has a new visual device that helps them gauge their progress. “We purchased a number of carbon monoxide breathalyzer-type devices,” says Doberstein. “Smokers can watch as their carbon monoxide levels decrease with each week as they quit.”

You’ll get one-on-one help from a tobacco cessation specialist who can suggest over-the-counter products proven to make quitting easier and provide research-based tips and advice to help you succeed.

Most insurance companies cover the cost of counseling sessions and nicotine replacement products, but it’s best to contact your insurance provider for details.
