Enger Tower to glow gold Sunday to honor youngest patients with cancer

Young Addy during treatment for Wilms tumor

A familiar landmark in Duluth will be glowing gold Sunday, Sept. 30, in honor of pediatric cancer patients.  And the mom of one such patient was the catalyst behind the lighting.

“Since September is childhood cancer awareness month, I saw this as my chance to publicly raise awareness for our children who can’t speak for themselves,” says Amber Lovaasen, of Hibbing, whose daughter is a cancer survivor.

Addy Lovaasen was diagnosed with an advanced form of Wilms tumor at the tender age of 11 months.  Pediatric Oncologist Dr. Andrea Watson was a part of Addy’s care team and helped care for the little girl.

“Addy’s treatment required very aggressive chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. She has grown into a beautiful, strong and determined little girl who never stops smiling,” says Dr. Watson.  “She brings joy to all she meets, and her parents are models of patience and hope. When she comes to see me at the clinic, it makes my day. I am so proud of who she is and amazed at what they all have been through. Our community should embrace their message of hope and join in to support other children and families facing childhood cancer.”

Now 8, Addy and her mom want to shed light on pediatric cancer patients by illuminating Enger Tower.  “It will be lit gold for our brave warriors,” Amber adds.  “I want to get the word out to as many childhood cancer families as possible.”

The family will not be able to watch the lighting live, but hope that others will make a point to recognize the Duluth landmark glowing gold Sunday – a shining reminder of the many brave, young people and their families who have fought or continue to fight childhood cancer.
