Published on July 06, 2017
Essentia Health will invest $14 million dollars by expanding its Grand Rapids Clinic and becoming partner of Lakewood Surgery Center. The project is designed to offer more health choices to the residents of Itasca County and surrounding areas.
"This expansion allows us to provide affordable, high quality care to the residents of the Grand Rapids and Deer River communities in a familiar place they know and trust," says Hematologist/Oncologist Dr. Dan Nikcevich, who leads Essentia in Northeastern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin. "It' one more way we can help make a healthy difference in the lives of the people we're called to serve."
Lakewood Surgery Center has been serving patients in the area for 11 years with much success. But physicians wanted to offer their patients more options, so they approached Essentia.
"The surgeons, physicians and staff are all here still for the people of Grand Rapids who have come to love and appreciate Lakewood Surgery Center," says Dr. Dan Margo, a general surgeon and Lakewood' Board Chair. "This new partnership will give our patients much better access to low cost, high quality care and expanded services for them as well."
The expansion will allow patients increased access to cardiology, podiatry and orthopedics services; as well as future access to urology, and ear, nose and throat (ENT) care. Dr. Margo says oral surgery care will be provided through further partnership with our local dental group in Grand Rapids.
"Our patients will receive the appropriate care right here in Grand Rapids, with the same physicians they're used to seeing, but now have access to Essentia specialists, if they need that level of care," adds Dr. Margo.
Essentia' expanded regional presence with the Deer River hospital, clinic and Grand Rapids Clinic is to serve these communities and patients.
"Our teams in Deer River, Grand Rapids, and Remer are excited to share in the commitment of the Grand Rapids expansion project with this community," says Marsha Green, chief operating officer and administrator at Essentia Health Deer River. "We're going to be able to serve our growing patient population with the new access to specialties and primary care this will offer closer to home."
Essentia Health selected MedCraft as its development partner. MedCraft is a national leader in the development, financing, and management of ambulatory care and medical office buildings. They will purchase the building and land where the Essentia Health Grand Rapids Clinic is located and develop the expansion. Kraus-Anderson will serve as general contractor for the 25,000 square-foot expansion.
Construction will begin in July, with a planned completion date of late spring, 2018. Contractors plan to take full advantage of the local workforce during the build-out.
Lakewood Surgery Center, Bonner Eye Clinic, Itasca Surgical Clinic, Radtke Physical Therapy, and the Essentia Health Grand Rapids Clinic will remain open during construction to serve patients.
An ice cream social is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 11 to celebrate the expansion project. The complimentary event is open to the public.
Media interested in interviews are invited to the Essentia Health-Grand Rapids Clinic, 1542 Golf Course Road, from 1 to 3 p.m. June 28.
