The award is a result of the heart-warming initiative that paired a team of students from Fosston High School with residents of the Essentia Health- Fosston Living Center and tenants of Prairie Pines Assisted Living for a class project, documenting their lives. The students sat with grandpas and grandmas, or great uncles and aunts in the community and heard their life stories. From international wars to drastic changes in technology and an evolving American story, the students heard history lessons come to life.
These stories were then collected and made into personal, high-quality, hard cover books that documented their lives. After months of gathering stories and designing pages, the students proudly unveiled their own creations to the people they were made for.
This life-changing assignment not only took the students beyond the walls of the school and into the community, but also gave the senior citizens a chance to tell their own unique stories.
Staff at the nursing and assisted living homes, along with local leadership and high school English teachers will be honored at the Leading Age Institute in St. Paul, Minn. from February 7-9, 2018.
