Published on April 04, 2017
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) Education Recognition Certificate for quality diabetes self-management education was awarded to the Diabetes Education team at the Essentia Health Brainerd Clinic in February 2017.
The ADA believes that this program offers high-quality education that is an essential component of effective diabetes treatment. Education recognition status is verified and awarded for four years. Essentia Health Diabetes Resource Program was originally recognized in February 1999.
Programs that achieve recognition status have a team of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide comprehensive information and support for diabetes management. Diabetes Education team members at the Brainerd Clinic include registered nurses and a registered dietitian who are Certified Diabetes Educators (CDE) and Endocrinology care. "The process of obtaining certification gives professionals a national standard by which to measure the quality of services they provide", comments Karen Peterson, Operations Manager at the Essentia Health Brainerd Clinic. "And it assures our community and patients that they are receiving the highest quality and service."
According to the ADA diabetes affects 8.3 percent of the United States population. In Central Minnesota, the percent affected by diabetes is 6.4-7.5 percent.
"Diabetes is a chronic disease, meaning once diagnosed it will be a part of the individual' life," said Michelle Pelkey, Diabetic Educator at Essentia Health. "Most importantly approximately 98% is ‘self management' or what that individual does to control their blood sugar and prevent complications. Diabetes changes over time and we provide ongoing support to people with diabetes."
The Diabetes Resource Program offers support for individuals with Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes, Gestational Diabetes and individuals interested in or currently using insulin pump therapy and continuous glucose sensors. Appointments for managing diabetes are available through group classes and one-on-one individual appointments for both education or medical management.
