Essentia partners with AHA for GoRED webinar

Did you know that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women? In 2019, it accounted for 301,280 deaths among U.S. women, or about one in every five female deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Essentia Health is proud to partner with the American Heart Association for a virtual GoRED webinar on Thursday, May 19. During the engaging and interactive presentation, viewers will learn about women’s risk factors for heart disease and how to minimize those factors while enjoying a longer, healthier life. They also will hear from Essentia cardiologists Dr. Natalia Rocha, Dr. Catherine Benziger and Dr. Nicole Worden — as well as a local survivor who has an inspiring story to share after experiencing a severe heart attack in fall 2021.

A Q&A session will conclude the webinar.

“Knowledge is power. Only half of women recognize heart disease as their No. 1 killer. Furthermore, one in four women will die within one year after their first heart attack,” Dr. Benziger said. “Sadly, heart disease deaths are increasing in women due to rising risk factors, especially in middle-aged women. It’s critical to know your risk so you can prevent it.”

Dr. Benziger says factors that increase the risk for heart disease include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, smoking, inactivity and pregnancy-related conditions like pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes.

The GoRED presentation starts at 11:15 a.m. Thursday. Registration is free and open to the public.
