Essentia Health to offer urogynecology services with arrival of Dr. Erin Maetzold
Essentia Health-Fargo is proud to welcome urogynecologist Dr. Erin Maetzold, a notable addition that marks the beginning of a new service line at the hospital.
As the only fellowship-trained urogynecologist in both the Essentia Health system and state of North Dakota, Dr. Maetzold will make important surgical and non-surgical treatments for pelvic floor disorders more accessible for women across the region. These conditions include pelvic organ prolapse, urinary or bowel incontinence and overactive bladder.
“About 1 in 4 women will experience a pelvic floor disorder in their lifetime, yet many are unaware that treatment options are available,” said Dr. Maetzold. “Oftentimes, women are too embarrassed to even bring up their symptoms with a doctor and just try to live with their condition. As the only urogynecologist in North Dakota, I will strive to reduce the stigma surrounding many of these conditions and educate women about available treatment options that can dramatically improve their quality of life.”
Urogynecologists are physicians who complete medical school and a residency in obstetrics and gynecology or urology. These physicians are specialists with additional years of fellowship training and certification in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. This training provides expertise in the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of conditions that affect the muscles and connective tissue of the female pelvic organs.
Dr. Maetzold joins Essentia Health after completing a three-year fellowship at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. A native of Dickinson, Maetzold attended undergraduate school at Concordia College in Moorhead and medical school at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.
The formal field of urogynecology is fairly new, although doctors have treated pelvic floor disorders for years. The first urogynecologists were board-certified in the U.S. in 2013. With a small number of fellowship-graduates each year, Dr. Maetzold is part of a select group of specialists in the country.
“Dr. Maetzold brings an incredible skillset to Essentia Health,” said Dr. Stefanie Gefroh, physician division chair in Essentia’s West Market. “We are excited to offer our patients this new service line, further enhancing the level of care we provide to the communities we are privileged to serve.”
Dr. Maetzold officially begins at Essentia Health on Wednesday, Sept. 21. To schedule an appointment with her, please call (701) 364-8900.
