Essentia Health steps up for students

al_uwWith kids set to return to the classroom in about a month, Essentia Health is stepping up for a good cause.

Essentia proudly served as a sponsor of the 24th annual United Way of Cass-Clay School Supply Drive. This drive was held throughout the Fargo-Moorhead area to provide students and families in need with the supplies necessary for a successful school year.

The goal this year was to provide 6,000 local students with a backpack and set of school supplies. As a “Hero Sponsor,” Essentia Health contributed a special donation to help ensure this goal could be met.

Crayons, backpacks, binders, notebooks and other supplies filled tables and bins throughout Scheels Arena in Fargo, where 600 volunteers gathered on Thursday.

Al Hurley, chief operating officer for Essentia’s West Market, was among the volunteers who worked to fill the thousands of backpacks with school supplies so they would be ready for the children and families to pick up next week.

“Essentia’s core mission is to make a healthy difference in people’s lives, whether that be within the walls of our facilities or out in the communities we have the privilege to serve,” said Hurley. “By helping these students head back to school with the supplies necessary to be confident and successful, we are helping them live healthier lives and boosting our communities.”

The backpacks and school supplies will be available to K-12 students in need who attend school in Cass or Clay counties.

Families in need can pick up these supplies at Scheels Arena on the following days:

  • Tuesday, Aug. 9, from 4:30-6 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 10, from 4:30-6 p.m.
  • Thursday, Aug. 11, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“We are grateful to the United Way for going above and beyond to help local kids start the school year off right,” said Hurley. “This has been a cause that Essentia has been proud to support, and we are thankful to everyone in this community who contributed to its success.”
