Dr. Joe Bianco named Essentia Health East Region Physician of the Year

Long-time Ely physician Dr. Joe Bianco was honored for his contributions to medicine last week. He was named Physician of the Year for Essentia Health’s East Region, which includes northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin.

Each year since 2003, Essentia Health has recognized a physician who puts patients first, demonstrates clinical excellence and makes significant contributions to his or her colleagues, practice or profession. All nominations come from physicians and the award recipient is chosen by past winners of the award.

Stroke research results published in New England Journal of Medicine

Several Essentia Health physicians and research scientists are celebrating the recent journal publication of a major stroke treatment trial (RESPECT), which included patients enrolled through the Essentia Institute of Rural Health.

The RESPECT Trial compared treatment using a closure device versus medication therapy in preventing strokes caused by blood clots travelling through the patent foramen ovale, a flap-like opening between the left and right upper chambers of the heart. Results of the study were published in the March 21, 2013 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.
